Growing up

Dwarf hamsters are very clean pet; they spent most of their time scratching and cleaning themselves when they are not sleeping. Taking care of them does not involve a lot of time nor effort, thus it is a good news for pet owners. A clean environment, fresh food and water are all they ask for. Of course, pet owners should spend time playing and communicating with the little critters. Hamster don't see very well, but they can smell and hear well so let them get used to your smell and your voice.

Handling

Beware! Dwarf hamsters have fainted hearts and they bite when they are scared, even you don't mean to frighten them. Well not to worry, as there are a number of ways to pick up your little friend properly, and they aren't difficult to pull out. Now, before you want to try the following, make sure you wash your hands so that the hamsters will not mistake your fingers as delicious food:

Traditional grasp

The Traditional method:

Gently approach the hamster with your hand and pet its back a few times, then slowly curls up your thumb and little finger to form a little bowl to cover the entire body, leaving only a little of the head visible. If the hamster isn't nervous, pick up the body and quickly use another hand to support the bottom. Pet its back to comfort the hamster.

Bao doesn't care if he has been turned up-side-down, as long as he has food in his hands

The luring method:

Similar to the "traditional" method; start by holding a seed or some food in your palm, then form a bowl with your fingers. Lure the hamster to walk itself into your palm. Don't forget to pet once completed.

The back grip

The back grip:

Gently approach the hamster slowly, pet the back a few times, and then use your thumb and another finger to grip the skin/fur on its upper back. This particular area of the skin on his back, located about 1cm behind the neck or ears, is loosely attached to the flesh thus it doesn't hurt the hamster. Lift the body up and then put on your another hand. This is one of the safest methods without getting bit.

Be careful! Do not use too much force when using gloves

Thick Gloves:

Proceed with the traditional method, only that we have to be careful with the force because we may choke the hamster with too much grasp. The advantage of using gloves is, of course, almost completely bite-proof. It's best for emergency such as escapes, or riot control (2 or more hamsters fighting) ^_^

The rules of thumb are:

  • Do not catch the hamster by surprise
  • Do not touch a hamster after touching food, and vice-versa!
  • Do not use a wet hand
  • Do not pick up a sleeping hamster
  • Do not kiss your hamster, they wouldn't like it and you know what they will do when they don't enjoy... BITE!
  • Do not let the hamster fall off your hands, in the lift-up process or after it lands on your palm; he may remember the bad experience and refuse to get on your hands in the future
  • Do not shake or move rigorously while the hamster is in your hands

A sand bath helps to keep our little friends clean and comfortable.

Sanitary

Cleaness is very important to keep YOU and your pet healthy. Fortunately, dwarf hamsters don't consume much, compared to much larger pets like dogs or cats, and thus they would make a much smaller mess for you to clean. Do not overlook cleaning; your pet's health and lifespan depends greatly on it. Here is a list of tasks and recommended schedules:

Food Everyday: dispose unused leftover and refill the food dish or bowl. Do not give too much as hamsters would stock up excess food in their cheeks and they may forget to empty the pouches when a new patch of food arrive. This could lead to sickness.

Water Every 2 to 3 days: Dipose leftover, wash the nozzle and the bottle and refill with fresh cool water. Boiled water if tap water isn't safe for direct consumption.

Sand Bath Everyday or whenever necessary: Dipose all bathing sands and refill. Hamster may bath inside the "basin" and urinate on the shavings, or doing both in the bath. Therefore it varies.

Shavings Once a week: Dipose all and make a new layer of about 1/2 inch high.

Cage, Aquarium and Accessories Once a week: Wash everything in warm water and scrub if necessary. Do not use strong bleach or solution. Soap is okay and make sure all items are rinsed with clear water afterward.
