Food
Most dwarf hamsters love sun flower seed; however each hamster has different taste, just like
their personalities. In general, food that are high in fat, sugar or salt are bad for their little stomach.
Packaged hamster food is convenient, safe and healthy; it should be the major part of the diet. For snacks,
small amount of fresh vegetable, except peas and spices, makes a good, completed diet. Fresh water for
every 2-3 days; water should be boiled (and let it cool down before serving) if tap water, in your area,
isn't safe to drink untreated.
Bad for hamster:- Chocolate (NO!)
- Candies
- Cake with icing
- Oily food
- Peas and spices
Good for hamster:- Packaged hamster food
- critter cubes
- Sun flower seeds (small amount only, too much = fat)
- Unsweetened plain or wheat bread / bun
- Fresh vegetables such as lettuce, brocoli, carrot
The best time to feed your hamsters is usually the evening, when they start
waking up with an empty stomach. Call a hamster by one's name, and try to feed
one in your palm.
Living space
Usually it means the "cage", or an aquarium. A good cage should measure at least 2 feet long and 1 feet wide
to ensure there is enough exercise room for our little friends. If budget is allowed, get a 2 stories cage
for accessories that you may purchase later. However, do not get a very tall cage with 3 stories or more as
dwarf hamsters are afraid of height, and may be seriously injuried. For starter, the following accessories are
essential:
| Water bottle |
It is way better than using a water dish, to prevent the hamster from: falling into the dish by
accident, getting wet and become sick, making a mess by dumping shavings are other object into the water... etc.
Buy the ones with a long drinking tube with a steel ball at the tip, and avoid the ones with spring; unlike
bigger rodents, dwarf hamsters can't push the tip hard enough to let the water out, so be careful.
| | | | Shavings |
Pine and ceddar mixed, ceddar or others chips are perfect choices. Do not use pine alone because it tends to
have strong smell and the pet may have problem to breath properly. Shavings is for absorbing droppings,
urine and serving as building material for their nest.
| | | | Food dish or bowl |
When there is leftover, it is much easier to clear and clean the bowl than picking the pieces up from
the floor (a nearly impossible task).
| | | | Hiding place or sleeping space |
It varies from dried coconut shell to plastic house-shaped box. Basically it is a harder-to-reach place
where the hamster feels safe; either hiding from attacks or a place to build nest.
| | | | Chewing stone or stick |
Blocks of salt or wood sticks specialized for rodent uses, picked up from pet store. Unlike human, the
central incisors (front teeth) of hamsters never stop growing until the day they die. Therefore they must
find something to grand their teeth in order to keep them at proper length. This is a very important item.
| | | | Excercise wheel |
It isn't an hamster cage without an excercise wheel; hamsters simply love it. They would spend the whole
night running on it, or whenever they feel excited. It is best if you could buy the ones with solid surface,
which is better than the grid ones, although you may have to wash it more
often.

Preferably, unpainted cages is better because hamsters bite on the bars occasionally. If an aquarium is
used, make sure a removable lid is secured on the top to avoid escapes.
Concerning the location, it is recommended to find a quiet, not too much sun, well ventilated yet not too
much drafts corner to place the cage.
